No more tears
Article Abstract:
Japanese business has undergone a period of change since the failure of Yaimachi Securities, which was followed by other failures in the financial services industry. There is greater emphasis on self-reliance, and greater willingness among managers to face problems. The labor market is also becoming increasingly flexible for younger people, who are more likely than before to accept a job with a foreign company or set up a company on their own. The old ways persist, but they are being undermined by the forces of change.

Mrs Watanabe learns to invest
Article Abstract:
Japanese savers have been affected by low rates of interest, while companies are cutting pension benefits, and these factors are affecting households' attitudes to investment. The Japanese market for life insurance has also become saturated, and this means that mutual funds and other vehicles are likely to become more popular. Small investors are puting money indirectly into stocks, and are also buying more stocks directly. This could help to improve corporate governance in Japanese companies.

Slow financial starvation
Article Abstract:
The Japanese financial services industry has not benefited as much as expected from deregulation which started in 1998, and returns for savers are low, which is a problem for the pension system that has to deal with an ageing population. Financial regulation is lax, and cross shareholdings hamper takeovers. Government credit for borrowers with problems is part of a tendency for the government to favor producers rather than consumers, which restricts choice and returns for savers.
