Home for the holidays
Article Abstract:
Cathay Pacific Airways passengers run the risk of spending the holidays away from home. The airline's pilots were angered by the collapse of the talks between their union and Cathay Pacific's management and said that they would refuse to work on their days off from Dec 15 to 21, 1997. The pilots have even threatened to extend their action if Cathay Pacific will not accede to their demands. The pilots, together with the other members of the 1,050-member Hong Kong Aircrew Officer's Association, are asking for an extra $9.4 mil in annual wage increases.

Turbulence in the air
Article Abstract:
The planned alliance between American Airlines and British Airways has qualified approval from the European Union. The airlines have sought immunity from US antitrust laws to collaborate on fares and this has been permitted if the United Kingdom accepts an open skies agreement. The alliance should be assessed by supporters on commercial grounds, and by regulators on anti-trust grounds. The airlines should not have a say in whether an open skies policy operates.
