Rail competition in the south
Article Abstract:
Marseille Provence airport reported record results in passenger traffic in 2000 but expects competition from the new TGV Mediterranee high speed train service to Paris, France, to lower its overall passenger traffic figures in 2001. Part of the airport's robust growth is due to the increase in North African routes. International traffic accounted for 1/3 of the airport's total passengers in 2000. Marseille Provence's freight business grew by 3.5% to nearly 40,000 tons in 2000.

Hubs win back traffic
Article Abstract:
Airports in France reported strong gains in terms of passenger traffic and freight in 2000. Traffic growth at French hub airports has been reinforced by the development of global airline alliances and airports that have captured a share of the low-cost carrier market. However, a new high speed train service between Paris and the Mediterranean is expected pose a strong threat to air transport when it opens in Jun 2001.
