Nordic: power building
Article Abstract:
The deregulation of the Nordic electricity sector has encouraged the investment of several foreign companies in 1998, with UK-based Eastern Electric committed to purchasing 34% of Finnish-based electricity supplier Savon Voima. A previous bid of 111 million pounds sterling by Swedish-based Vattenfall failed in 1997. A bid of 6.9 million pounds sterling has been offered for Norwegian-based OsloKraft from a consortium consisting of Belgium gas and electric suppliers. The company's new name is expected to be Scandic Energy.

A challenging marketplace
Article Abstract:
Mergers and acquisitions have traditionally been regarded rather negatively in Japan, but this situation is now beginning to change. There were 57 mergers in 1996, from 33 in 1995, and the number of mergers rose to 44 in the first half of 1997. Public takeover bids of listed companies are still very uncommon, but have been increasing in number. It is becoming easier for foreign concerns to set up or develop a presence in Japan. However, there are still a number of areas of concern, including corporate valuations.

Making it big in Japan
Article Abstract:
A number of factors led to a rise in the volume of domestic mergers and acquisitions in Japan in 1997. Merger and acquisition deals are now becoming an increasingly common feature of corporate strategy for Japanese companies. These deals are mainly in the form of friendly transactions, and very few hostile merger and acquisition deals take place. Many merger and acquisition negotiations are managed by a single trusted intermediary, as Japanese managers are often unwilling to involve third parties.
