Article Abstract:
India and Pakistan carried out nuclear tests in 1998, but a Feb 1999 visit by Indian prime minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, to meet Pakistani prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, led to promises of an effort to settle differences peacefully. Partition and the slaughter of Muslims in India, and Sikhs and Hindus in Pakistan, was followed by military governments in Pakistan, though India has a less intense obsession with its neighbor. Article Abstract:
Chinese prime minister, Zhu Rongji, is visiting the US, and will seek to improve relations between the two countries. He faces criticism on human rights and other issues, but he is also concerned about the US world role. The US plans a regional defense anti-missile system which China sees as threatening and likely to trigger an arms race. China is also concerned about the US attack on Yugoslavia, and the implications of this, which include concern that the US could attack China over Tibet.
