UK sales of sugar confectionery in 1998 reached 1.38 billion pounds sterling, with gum sales for the year amounting to 267.2 million pounds sterling. Volume sales of sugar confectionery for 1998 amounted to 242,380 t, with gum volume sales reaching 22,875 t. Within the sugar confectionery sector, pastilles and jellies accounted for a 41.2% volume share and a 43.1% value share, followed by mints and boiled sweets. The chewing gum sector is dominated by sugar-free gum, accounting for a 73.7% volume share and a 74.6% value share. Sugar confectionery sales are forecast to reach 1.57 billion pounds sterling by 2003, with gum sales reaching 353.3 million pounds sterling.
