A number of smaller airlines are offering low-cost flights to Europe, and British Airways is also planning to enter this market. British Airways argues that it will increase the number of people using airlines by cutting costs and that it does not aim to push competitors out of the market. EasyJet sees a number of similarities between its operations and British Airways' plans. The new airlines have created a new market and they will be tough comeptition for British Airways.

Dogfight over Europe

European airlines are forming strategic alliances with other major international airlines to gain greater foothold on the global market. Lufthansa, for instance, has joint ventures with United Airlines, SAS, Thai Airways and Air Canada and is seeking partnership with another Asian airline for greater access to the Asian market. Meanwhile, Swissair is not intimidated by the mega-alliance which will surely take time to commence.
