Article Abstract:
Elections have been held in Malaysia, and the ruling coalition has retained power. Malaysioan prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad, had blamed outsiders for the Asian financial crisis, and has rejected both economic and political reform. The Malaysian economy is recovering, but there could be problems later. The economy was in a better condition than that of many neighboring countries, and that is partly due to foreign investment. The way elections have been carried out could damage democracy in Malaysia.

Heir today, gone tomorrow
Article Abstract:
Malaysian finance minister and deputy prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim, has been sacked by Mahathir Mohamad, prime minister. There have been a number of allegations made against Anwar, who claims a conspiracy is involved. Anwar has disagreed with the prime minister on how to tackle Malaysia's economic problems. His policies were favored by foreigners, but some middle-class Malaysians do not trust him. He may also have been seen as a threat due to his grass-roots following.
