Okinawa's rethink: Japan
Article Abstract:
Residents of Okinawa have changed their minds in the two years since they demonstrated in Oct 1995 to expel the American military bases on their island. Okinawa is home to three of four American military bases in Japan, and the military bases account for 7% of the prefecture's economy. The bases also make Okinawa eligible for government aid amounting to 430 bil yen, or over 65% of the prefecture's annual income. The Japanese government hopes to develop the island's tourism industry and small manufacturing business in an effort to wean the area away from its dependence on the bases.
