Oligopoly or contestable markets in the UK package tour industry?
Article Abstract:
The UK package tour industry has been suggested as an oligopoly because it consists of extremely large firms and small firms as well. An analysis of the revenue generating capacities of the firms involved in an oligopoly using Baum and Mudambi's model revealed that strategic withholding by very large firms is beneficial to both large and small firms. However, n contrast to a basic assumption of the model, there were no evidence indicating that strategic withholding leads to higher industry profits. This suggested that the UK package tour industry may not be sufficiently oligopolistic.
