Confidence game: the unbearable lightness of Thai democracy
Article Abstract:
Thailand faces problems related to patronage politics and the cause lies in the system rather than the individuals involved. Political mechanisms have tended not to move as rapidly as the economy, and this is an international problem. Liberalization of the economy would reduce the opportunities for corruption as well as improving economic efficiency. There is also a need for political decentralization to give people experience of running the affairs of their own neighbourhoods.
