James Levine has been the artistic director and orchestra conductor for the New York Metropolitan Opera Company since 1971. Levine believes the composers work should be performed as written, without additions or other distortions by the conductor or performers. He has rehabilitated what once was a fading company.

In a surprising result the three-party coalition government of prime minister Vaclav Klaus lost its majority in parliamentary elections. Klaus will have to work with the opposition Christian Democratic Union and Social Democratic Party, which should move the government slightly to the left.
