On probation: thalidomide
Article Abstract:
Thalidomide caused terrible deformities to fetuses when it was prescribed to pregnant women during the 1950s and 1960s. Since that time, the drug has not been used much. However, new evidence suggests thalidomide may be a good treatment for erythema nodosum leprosum and other diseases.

The Federal Drug Administration will approve the over-the-counter (OTC) sale of nonprescription drugs in 1998. OTC medications that are likely to be sold in 1998 even without prescription include Nicorette, Axid/Zantac/Carafate, Claritin, Questran and topical erythromycin.
