Workers in China organize to oppose restructuring; at foreign and domestic firms, long-docile labor force learns benefits of spontaneous actions
Article Abstract:
China's labor force, which for many years has kept silent despite the violation of their rights, are learning the benefits of mobilizing themselves. As millions of workers are laid off following corporate restructuring moves aimed at better chances of competing in the global economy, China's long-docile workers are beginning to see that only through spontaneous organization can they assert their rights, make demands and win concessions. This newfound power in organizing was demonstrated by the the experience of two Unilever PLC executives sent to its Shanghai detergent plant to announce its shutdown, who were shouted down by the factory's 100 workers and prevented from leaving the site until they promised further talks.

MTV's success in China provides a foothold in market for Viacom
Article Abstract:
Viacom Inc has been very successful with its Music Television network in China despite strong anti-Western sentiments among the Chinese. To cater to the Chinese nationalism, the network airs over 70% of the music performed by Chinese, Hong Kong or Taiwanese artists in its Mandarin language channel. Moreover, programs are produced in the mainland by Viacom's three Chinese partners. As a result, MTV's Asian advertising revenue for 1998 has surpassed the company's estimates and is expected to increase by 40% in 1999.
