Out on a limb
Article Abstract:
Cases of work-related upper limb disorders (WRULDs) are becoming increasingly common in the UK. These disorders include vibration white finger, caused by long-term use of power tools, bursitis, an inflammation of the elbow or shoulder, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Some WRULDs appear to be classified as characterized by non-specific pain, and it is therefore hard for employees to prove that they are connected with a specific activity such as using a keyboard for long periods. RSI Association Director Andrew Chadwick believes that employers and employees should work together to eliminate WRULDs.

Don't shoot the messenger
Article Abstract:
The UK's Public Interest Disclosure Bill, which is due to come into effect in Jan 1999, will protect employees who speak out about malpractice in the workplace. It will also encourage employers to establish procedures that permit employees to express their concerns. The legislation has the support of powerful groups such as the trade unions and the Institute of Directors, and this will make it difficult for employers to overlook malpractice in the workplace. However, there is still no legal protection for employers against false disclosures.
