The sultans of SWAT
Article Abstract:
There has been an increase in the number of US Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams which involves a move toward a militarist mentality in US policing, according to East Kentucky University crimininology professor, Peter Kraska. Presidents and Congress have encouraged this trend, which has been linked to attepts to control drug trafficking. The police face individuals with protection from the Bill of Rights, while the military faces an enemy, so the military mindset is inappropriate for the police, critics argue. There have been a number of cases of overkill by SWAT teams.

Patten and the cops
Article Abstract:
Proposals to reform the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) have come from a commission headed by Chris Patten, and include measures to increase the proportion of Catholics in the police force. Catholic community leaders are exhorted to encourage Catholics to join the RUC. There are also proposals for greater accountability and for name changes. Some protestants in Northern Ireland have opposed these proposals, though the British government emphasises that they do not meet the demands of Sinn Fein.
