Article Abstract:
Expressions of support for Anwar Ibrahim, former Malaysian deputy prime minister, have come from the presidents of the Philippines and Indonesia. Anwar represents a new style of politician in favor of reform and a more pluralist system of politics, and a move away from corruption. Political changes in the South-East Asia include the end of the Suharto regime, and a new Thai government in 1997. Elections may be held in Thailand and Malaysia in 1999, and Indonesia may also hold an election in that year. Critics are concerned about the Islamist background of Anwar, and fear the influence of extremist Muslims.

The limits of politeness: ASEAN's failure
Article Abstract:
ASEAN has not responded well to the economic crisis in Southeast Asia. Its reluctance to involve itself in the internal affairs of its member nations worked when things went well in the region but has been very inadequate in response to financial and other problems.
