Overkill: youth crime
Article Abstract:
Youth crime is on the rise in the UK, and Home Secretary Jack Straw proposes reforms of police, social service and the youth court system to address the problem. Youth crime rose 40 percent between 1987 and 1997, with 25 percent of boys and 20 percent of girls under 18 admitting to the commission of a crime. One of Straw's proposals contained in the Crime and Disorder Bill is to create "youth-offender teams" to coordinate the work of parents, police, and others interested in rehabilitating young offenders. Another method aimed at reducing the incidence of crime among juveniles is a strict curfew that is drawing the ire of civil liberties groups.

Horrors of youth
Article Abstract:
There are misplaced fears about US youth after the massacre in Littleton, Colorado. The boys are seen as alienated and obsessed with computers, and the girls as inarticulate and waiting for cosmetic surgery. There are statistics to show that the behavior of young people is improving in some ways, such as a drop in adolescent sex. problems that may arise with children can be traced to their parents. The baby boomers have not been enthusiastic about reforming schools, nor have they controlled possession of guns.

The fountain of youth
Article Abstract:
It is commonplace to refer to older, more established business types as 'mature industries,' as distinct from the more dynamic growth industries. Business professors Charles Baden-Fuller and John Stopford make a persuasive case that the mature industry concept is a myth.
