The 1993 Oslo agreement that brought the promise of peace between Israelis and Palestinians appears to be defunct. Violence at the end of Sep 1996 saw 73 people killed and 1,500 injured, and the Israeli government plans to investigate the cause of the violence.

A deadlier intifada: Palestinians
Article Abstract:
The Palestinian uprising in Israeli occupied territories has lost much of its steam from when it first began in late 1987. Israelis have killed about 900 Palestinians during this period, and indications are they are beginning to get even more ruthless.

Most Palestinian Arabs fled Israel when it became independent or have relatives who are refugees, and Israel's 50th anniversary is an unhappy reminder that they have no homeland. Arabs who remained in Israel have the vote but do not have full equality.
