Wellington's solution
Article Abstract:
Deregulation of New Zealand's telecommunications industry since Apr 1987 has improved the efficiency of New Zealand Telecom, which runs the country's telephone service. The most significant privatization came in 1990 when a private consortium run by two US telephone companies, Bell Atlantic and Ameritech, bought New Zealand Telecom from the New Zealand government for $2.5 billion. Subsequent reorganization of New Zealand Telecom has helped cut the cost of telephone service 60% since 1987.
