Pascal Lamy, free-market Frenchman?
Article Abstract:
European trade commissioner, Pascal Lamy, is a Frenchman who will have to face French opponents when he is involved in trade talks later in 1999. He is well able to bridge a gap in perceptions of trade that exists between Europe and the US, and has good contacts both in France and abroad. He sees globalization and liberalization as positive developments, though he may be more protectionist than is initially apparent. He may have political ambitions in France. Lamy faces a difficult task in bringing about reforms without arousing opposition.
