Philip Morris Cos. posted an improvement of 3% in its operating income for the second-quarter of 1999. The company was helped by increased food sales in the US and by increased prices for cigarettes. Philip Morris' results were what analysts had expected for the period. The company reported $2.06 billion (2 billion euros) in operating income. During the same period in 1998, Philip Morris posted $2 billion.
