Philip Morris raises prices, other firms follow suit

Philip Morris Cos. is increasing the prices of its cigarettes by 18 US cents (17.2 European cents). The price hike represents the second-largest cigarette increase in history. Philip Morris is the largest maker of cigarettes in the US. Following the company's price hike, other major cigarette makers increased their prices. Discounts are being offered in order to lessen the impact of the price hike.

Barnesandnoble.com posts narrower loss

barnesandnoble.com. Inc. posted a lower-than-expected loss for the second-quarter of 1999. The online bookseller reported $22 million (21 million euros) in losses for the period. This was narrowly-lower than expected. During the same period in 1998, barnesandnoble.com posted $23.7 million in losses. The bookseller's sales increased by more than three times from $11.4 million to $39.1 million.
