SWITZERLAND: CHIP PRODUCTION AT MICRONAS
Article Abstract:
The Swiss semiconductor producer Micronas has started the production of 6-inch wafers in a new factory. An investment project of about DM 210mn is to be completed by the end of 1998. The next step is the introduction of the new 5-[micro sign]m technology by the beginning of 1999. Micronas and the Fribourg-based subsidiary Intermetall are to produce 80% of their integrated circuits in their own factories, 20% in cooperation with UMC. In the Micronas group, Intermetall accounts for about 85% of the total turnover of about SFr 270mn. The most important field of application is consumer electronics. Micronas produces audio ICs for stereo TVs as well as video ICs. According to managing director Wolfgang Karlsbach, 80% of stereo TVs are equipped with Micronas chips. Micronas is also equipping satellites of US-based Worldspace with chips. Worldspace satellites transmit radio programmes to regions with poor terrestrial infrastructure, such as Africa.
