Pioneer architecture centre provides a new port of call: Niall Phillips Architects has designed the UK's first purpose-built regional architecture centre, which opens in Bristol this week
Article Abstract:
The first purpose built regional architecture centre is opening in Bristol aiming to set standards against which future centres will be measured. The concept was inspired by successful centres in other counries. The centre is situated in a harbourside warehouse which has been refurbished by Niall Phillips Architects. The character of the warehouse has been preserved and the flexible space can accommodate exhibitions, school visits, seminars and a shop. Externally walls have been finished with hand-thrown pigmented roughcast render and internally the ground floor is finished in recycled, remilled oak, and it features a dramatic stairway.

A row of terraced houses in a London residential street were redeveloped by architects Spence Harris Hogan. Each house share features, finishes and detailing, but have subtle differences. One has a predominantly open plan layout with a central stair spine featuring cantilevered open treads. Also featured is Spanish limestone floor finishes and full-height glazed partitions.

A number of refurbishment projects are described. The UK architect Bisset Adams' spacious and well-lit office premises are ideally suited for the purposes of post-production company Lexington Post. Other refurbishment projects include work by architects Barr Gazetas, Butler & Young Associates and the Tugman partnership, Paul Brooks Architect, Redjacket and Proctor Matthews.
