Poetic and elemental: in defence of grey matter
Article Abstract:
People routinely denigrate concrete as a building material, but its nature can give it qualities which are often overlooked. Its fluid nature makes it adaptable to any emotional element the architect wishes to portray, from solidity to delicacy. The South Bank complex in London, England, gives the exhilarating feeling of cliff scenery in a city centre, whilst the interior of the Lloyd's Bank building in Buenos Aires, Argentina, has the delicacy of a Japanese screen. The changes in concrete which come with age also remind people of the elemental nature of all building materials.
