Pollster Victor Yuan has managed to catapult his firm, Horizon Research Group, as one of the leading market research companies in China despite the restrictions imposed by the government. The Chinese government has sanctioned him for participating in the Tiananmen Square march and for his report on the public criticism of the one-child policy. Since then, the government makes up 40% of Horizon's contracts. The issues Yuan covered for the government pertained to entrepreneurs' expectations of China's economic policy.

China cuts import tariffs; foreign-invested firms still get tax break

Article Abstract:

China reduces tariffs on a wide range of imported goods and extends tax breaks for some foreign-invested companies. The tariffs on 1,014 products will be reduced by between 8% to 78%. The extended tax breaks is offered to foreign companies that were established before 1994 and export most of their products. The tax initiatives are intended to attract more foreign investments to the country and strengthen its chance of joining the World Trade Organization.

Firecrackers receive a break; city lifts ban in effort to defuse tension

Officials in the industrial city of Shenyang, China, have lifted a ban on the use of pyrotechnics during celebrations of the Chinese New Year. The move, which has been welcomed by residents, has earned city officials some goodwill in this economically troubled city, where protests by unpaid workers of state-owned companies are common. Shenyang's decision to lift the pyrotechnics ban has led other cities in Liaoning province to follow suit.
