Power Politics: Enron plant in India, long dead, prepares to go on steam (startling comeback reflects concessions by company, new political realism)
Article Abstract:
Enron Corp's energy plant in Guhagar, India is due to open this month after years of controversy. After having their contract with the Indian government cancelled three years ago, the company was able to restore the agreement after offering several concessions. In 1995, political upheaval in the region threatened to kill the plan. After an improvement in diplomatic relations, Enron took steps to protect the environment surrounding the power plant as well as providing resources for the development of nearby villages. While the Dabhol plant is finally a reality, Enron Corp. still has two pending projects in India that are on hold due to finances.
