Pox on politicians: Rao is lightning rod for public outrage against graft
Article Abstract:
The public and the courts in India are showing a great willingness to bring charges of corruption and criminal conduct against politicians, regardless of whether there is adequate evidence to support the charges. Former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao has been implicated in a fraud scheme, though criminal proceedings against the leader of the Congress Party have been stayed. Trial courts have show a willingness to hear cases that have been brought for political reasons and are interpreting corruption laws and prosecutorial powers very broadly.

Who's clean now? Corruption scandal taints entire political establishment
Article Abstract:
Several Indian politicians in various parties have been suspected of and indicted for receiving bribes from a steel and power company. The widespread scandal may have an unpredictable effect on elections to be held in April 1996. Unlike most politicians, Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao may benefit from the scandal as he promotes the indictments. However, Rao may be hurt by the suspicion that he has permitted corruption in his cabinet. Figures in the Congress Party and the opposing Hindunationalist Bharatiya Janata Party may have taken bribes.

Appealing activism: Supreme Court takes on politicians, wins public praise
Article Abstract:
India's Supreme Court became the country's most popular and trusted public institution by actively attacking high-level govt corruption and other govt and social problems. Its legal foundations may make it the world's most powerful court, and over the past decade it has become willing to embrace that power, achieving legal independence from the executive branch in 1993. Critics and even some supporters want to see it become more accountable, and the scope of its oversight may be outrunning its actual capabilities.
