Pragmatism is the hallmark of Peking's foreign policy
Article Abstract:
Chinese foreign policy under Foreign Minister Qian Qichen has emphasized neutrality, the avoidance of overt pressure on other countries and the primacy of pragmatism over ideology. Qian deserves credit for restoring China's damaged relations with the West after the Jun 1989 repression and for placing China at the forefront of the developing countries. Recognition of South Korea and Israel and the end of support for North Korea and the Khmer Rouge demonstrate China's neutrality. However, China remains ready to assert itself in response to criticism as from the US over the prison-labor issue.

China should act with restraint: instead, its actions are often unworthy of a great power
Article Abstract:
China is truly one of the world's great powers but it persists in petty slights and snubs that demean it rather than displaying the magnanimity worthy of its status. While China still proclaims the laudable concept of 'one country, two systems' regarding Hong Kong, it has childishly resorted to gutter name-calling and repeated snubs in dealing with Gov Chris Patten. China's insistence on restoring the old colonial laws supplanted by the Bill of Rights is ironic, as those laws were passed to curb pro-China activists.

Pragmatism rules in China
Article Abstract:
China's ruling party's announcement that 'Deng Xiaoping Theory' is to become its guiding idealogy is ironic because the former leader was better known for his pragmatism. The reinterpretation of a long-established communism ideal allows China to adopt the concept of public ownership, permitting it to reduce the number of state-owned enterprises, while continuing to be a socialist state.
