Article Abstract:
Consumer spending in Germany is expected to rise by 2% during 1996 even though increased social security contributions and the new solidarity tax have been introduced. French consumers are expected to be cautious in the short term and maintain their current level of spending until the economy has recovered from its recent slowness. Consumer spending patterns for Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium and the United Kingdom are discussed.

In 1996, the Dutch furniture industry was valued at 4.4 billion Dutch Florins (DFl), of which DFl4.0 billion is made up by production. Wooden furniture takes the lion share of the market with a 10% increase in production in 1996 to DFl2,149 million. An overview of market trends is given, including details of foreign trade, consumption trends, and forecasts for the future.

Article Abstract:
Consumer expenditure in the seven major European countries remained constant in 1993. Spending improved in 1994 and is expected to rise further in 1995. Clothing and footwear spending will rise by 1.1% on average in 1995-96, after 0.8% growth in 1990-94. Spending on furniture and furnishings will rise by 4.3% in 1996, following estimated growth of 4.3% in 1994.
