Protection of confidential information in tax matters
Article Abstract:
The US is a signatory to 50 bilateral tax treaties and 10 information exchange accords plus the Multilateral Convention on Mutual Administration of Tax Matters. This means that the tax information of US citizens and companies may be requested by an official of a foreign government. Notification of such a request is part of many of these agreements, and a genuine proprietary interest in keeping such data confidential may be sufficient grounds to deny such a request. Tax administrators should be held to similar standard of responsibility as fiduciaries.

The impact of new EU rules on data protection
Article Abstract:
The European Commission has for some time been aware of the need for action on data protection at a European Union level, and the Council recently formally adopted a framework data protection directive as a common position. There is also work being undertaken on a directive dealing specifically with integrated services digital networks (ISDN). Data protection is a significant issue in many European Union affairs, and is a key element in all inter-governmental co-operation.
