Pushing the pendulum
Article Abstract:
The ongoing economic reforms in China are being threatened by schisms within the ruling Communist Party. Among other things, conservatives and pro-market reformists led by Deng Xiaoping are in disagreement over the economy's optimal rate of growth. While the former is pushing for a 6% growth rate in 1992, the latter wants the economy to expand by at least 10%. Although the reformists seem to lack a coordinated economic agenda, provinces such as Guangdong have started implementing their own reform programs.

Life is a beach?
Article Abstract:
China's Hainan Island hopes to become the 'Hawaii of the East,' but it faces formidable obstacles. Transportation and infrastructure are underdeveloped, though the provincial government is rectifying that. Most of its tourists come from China, and it is little known outside Southeast Asia, with a minuscule advertising budget. Its booming economy, status as one of China's five special economic zones and the growth of outside interest may help Hainan succeed.

Officers' commission: arms procurement driven by profit rather than need
Article Abstract:

The wide range of weaponry in the country's arsenal serves as a testament to corruption in the Thai military. Arms suppliers admit albeit anonymously that such practices are essential in securing military contracts.
