Ready for action: integrated submarine combat systems
Article Abstract:
A number of highly integrated combat systems are being readied for introduction aboard military submarines and ships. Majority of these systems, which will be based on international open standards, will be capable of making use of commercially available hardware and software. The systems, which will feature what manufacturers call 'plug-and-play' modularity, will be easily expandable and upgradable throughout their existence.

Article Abstract:
Warships of the future will have to deal with a deluge of information in tomorrow's battlefields. Onboard systems will have to adequately handle and process information coming from a variety of sources such as onboard sensors and external datalinks such as satellite communications. Solutions being considered include a wide-area network backbone based on the asynchronous transfer mode protocol.
