RFAC urges Olympic contest
Article Abstract:
The Royal Fine Art Commission (RFAC) is encouraging the Olympic Games Executive Committee for Manchester, England, to hold a competition for the design of sports facilities for Manchester's bid for the Olympic Games 2000. Architect Kenzo Tange has drawn up an outline plan for Olympic facilities but the Committee propose to use developer-led design-and-build schemes on the project. A design consultant would draw up briefs to ensure high quality architectural designs. The RFAC and architectural bodies believe this method is unlikely to result in buildings of architectural excellence.

Farrell joins attack on D&B Olympics
Article Abstract:
Architects have criticised the way Manchester, England, is planning sports facilities in its bid for the Olympics 2000. Terry Farrell, Sir Norman Foster, and others, believe Manchester should have held an architectural competition for the design of new sports facilities. Manchester has revealed the first of three Olympic schemes; a 50 million pound sterling Olympic arena, rail concourse, offices and hotel. The scheme is designed by Austin-Smith:Lord with developer Vector Investments and phase one will be built even if Manchester fails to win its Olympic bid.

Olympic bid hits first hurdle
Article Abstract:
The Manchester Olympic Bid Committee has chosen design and build as the way it wishes to develop new buildings for its bid for the Olympic Games 2000. Manchester wants private money to be used to build the sports facilities needed for the games and design excellence is subsidiary to that aim. It will have a design panel to consider tenders. The Royal Institute of British Architects considers a design-led competition should have been held. It is pointed out that no world-class architecture has resulted from design and build work.
