Article Abstract:
All the Canadian premiers, except Quebec's Lucien Bouchard will meet from Sep 15-16, 1997, to discuss efforts to bolster national unity and discourage Quebec from another secession attempt. Bouchard is expected to call a provincial election in spring 1997, which could lead to another referendum.

Article Abstract:
Canadian Prime Minister Jacques Chretien's risky call of early elections resulted in his Liberal Party remaining in power, but much weakened. The Conservative, New Democratic and Reform Parties all strengthened. Chretien's strategy of ignoring the Quebec separatist issue may cause a resurgence.
