Repsol reports 15% rise in 1998 profit

Repsol SA, Madrid, posted a 15% rise in net profit , the best performance for the year reported so far by any major international oil company. Repsol said its consolidated net rose to 145.52 billion pesetas ($982.3 million) from 126.1 billion pesetas a year earlier, boosted by a strong demand for oil and natural gas in its domestic market. Operating climbed 18% to 275.84 billion pesetas from 233.69 billion pesetas last year. Profit from refining and marketing operations rose 40%, gas and electricity operations showed a 55% gain and chemicals showed a 3.7% gain in profit.
