Rescued from a grave condition: After years of neglect, the Grade II listed Dissenters' Chapel in Kensal Green Cemetery has been refurbished by English Heritage as a base for the public to visit the cemetery
Article Abstract:
The Grade II listed Dissenters' Chapel at Kensal Green Cemetery in North London was completed in 1834 to the designs of John Griffith of Finsbury, in the Greek Revival manner. It had been neglected and a partnership of the Historic Chapels Trust, North Kensington City Challenge and English Heritage, was formed in 1995 to rescue the chapel. The roof was renewed and the vestry was rebuilt, using the original stone. Internally, timber pews were reinstated and the timber pulpit was reconstructed. New facilities such as a meeting and exhibition room, kitchen, and store are housed in a contemporary addition.

Stately progress: Hill Hall, Essex
Article Abstract:
The 2 million pounds sterling restoration of Hill Hall, an Elizabethan mansion in Essex, England, has presented significant challenges for English Heritage architect Nick Hill. It has taken three years to improve the building to a condition in which it can be leased. The team responsible for the restoration has placed strong emphasis on accuracy, and has invested a great deal of time and effort in finding materials as similar as possible to those used originally. It has necessary to have around 15,000 bricks made by hand.

Design diplomacy: The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is a product of the battle of styles - Gothic versus Classical - which raged in the mid-nineteenth century
Article Abstract:
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office building has undergone a 12-year six-stage refurbishment project. The latest interior stage was undertaken by Cecil Denny Highton/HOK. The building had suffered years of neglect and unsympathetic alterations. A detailed historical analysis was undertaken, so that particularly fine areas could be identified and restored to their original appearance. Office space had to be substantially increased and fitted with modern facilities.
