Looking for good value: jaunts to South Korea lure Japanese tourists

An increasing number of Japanese tourists are visiting South Korea on tours and shopping, taking advantage of the proximity of the two countries with each other and the appreciation of the yen compared to the won. The number of Japanese visitors going to South Korea has increased by 20% as of Feb. 1998, with travel packages costs decreasing by 10% compared to the previous year.

Easing policy, Habibie offers special status for East Timor

Indonesian President BJ Habibie proposed to offer special autonomy status to East Timor, the country's most critical territorial dispute, in a significant deviation from the unyielding position of former President Suharto. Several East Timorese activists already immediately turn down the proposal as one activist said that what they want is a referendum to vote for independence.
