Rubbish man
Article Abstract:
Liao Liangyu is a refuse collector in Beijing, China, who buys trash to sell to recycling centers. He is one of a number of rural migrants escaping poverty. Farmers have to perform voluntary labor, pay taxes and find funds for fertilizers but they are not always paid for their produce. As a rubbish collector, Liao's net profit is double or triple the average salary for an urban worker, though the job is seen as low-status. He would like to drive a truck since the prestige is greater, but the license is expensive. A truck driver earns only some 800 yuan per month compared to the profit from refuse collection, which can be 1,500 yuan.

Undesirable, maybe, but vital
Article Abstract:
An estimated 300,000 migrants were expelled from Beijing, China, for the 50th anniversary of the Communist party, but such efforts to remove migrants face a constant flow of those who return. Around 60% of the population lives in rural areas and employment creation tends to be in the cities. Rural migrants will do work that city people shun. Migrants dominate recycling and rubbish collection, and there is a hierrachy in the recycling industry, with wide differences in income.
