Russia's Putin puzzle
Article Abstract:
Vladimir Putin is Russian's acting president and also a presidential candidate in elections scheduled for Mar 26 2000. His manifesto contains contradictory statements, but this may be in order to appeal to voters, and there may be greater clarity if he is elected. He studied law and then joined the KGB, and sees his former profession as having protected him against the temptations of corruption.he sees prosperity as necessary for Russia to be strong, and it remains to be seen whether cronysim and authoritarianism become problems under his rule.

A Russian coronation
Article Abstract:
Russia's acting president, Vladimir Putin, looks set to win the Mar 2000 presidential elections, due to the weakness of the opposition. He has not set out his ideas in detail, though he has issued a number of popular decrees like rises in teachers' wages. He has also outlined some plans such as a ban on food imports, and greater control of Russia's regions. The war in Chechnya could still create some problems, and there is support for a negotiated settlement among most Russians. Putin's main opponent is Communist, Gennady Zyuganov.
