An irritation
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom government aims to abolish the right to trial by jury for a number of middle-ranking offenses such as possession of soft drugs. The aim is to use jury trials only for serious offenses such as robbery, rape or murder. The previous administration made similar proposals, but the government argues that the new proposals are different in that defendants can appeal to a judge when the magistrate refuses to permit a jury trial. The abolition of jury trials for these middle-ranking offenses could save some 70 million pounds sterling annually.

Article Abstract:
British crime figures show rises in crime, particularly for violent offenses. Meanwhile, the government's plans to restrict trial by jury have been criticized. Jack Straw, home secretary, argues that petty criminals will be most affected by changes to the jury system. He does not have plans to reform drug laws in Britain. He has been criticized for permitting the entryof Mike Tyson into Britain, and for planning to allow Augusto Pinochet to leave.
