The bubbles pop
Article Abstract:
Coca-Cola has reported a drop in net profit for 1st qtr 1999, and argues that world economic problems are to blame. European volumes have dropped, and US volumes have seen slower growth, so the problem does not lie in emerging markets hit by economic crisis. Marketing costs have increased, as has support for bottlers. Competition has increased, especially from PepsiCo. There is some risk of complacency at Coca-Cola, and problems have intensified since former chairman, Roberto Goizueta, died in Oct 1997.
