Russia's unlikely communist
Article Abstract:
Derk Sauer is a newspaper publisher in Russia who has set up a JV with the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times to launch Vedomosti, a newspaper. Sauer's Independent Media publishes two trade and nine consumer periodicals, and VNU has acquired a stake of 35% in the company. The market for quality newspapers is oversupplied in Russia, and it is seen as impossible to make a profit in the Russian market. Sauer argues that this is not the case, and sees an aversion to debt as a strength as well as a way to retain independence.
