SOFTWARE RECORDS Rs5,090 CRORE EXPORT REVENUE
Article Abstract:
A National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) survey has shown that the Indian software industry has earned an export revenue of Rs5,090 crore during the first half of the fiscal year 1998-99, a growth of 65.58 percent over the same period in 1997-98. The export is poised to reach over Rs11,000 crore by March 1999. During 1997-98, the software industry's total revenues were estimated at Rs11,040 crore including exports values of Rs6,530 crore. Revenues from the industry are expected to reach $6 billion by 2000 AD of which exports would contribute $4 billion. The privatisation of Internet services would also help the growth of software development. NASSCOM has predicted that Rs1,500 crore would need to be spent for Indian companies to become Y2K compliant. The government would shortly issue an ordinance making it mandatory for public sector units (PSUs) to declare to their shareholders whether they are Y2K compliant or not. (nr)
