STAR PAPER MILLS: NOT A 'STAR' PERFORMER
Article Abstract:
Star Paper Mills Ltd (SPML) of Calcutta is part of the Duncan Goenka group. In April 1995, it brought out a rights issue to raise Rs32.29 crore at a premium of Rs45 per share. It floated a public issue to mobilise Rs23.22 crore at a premium of Rs50 per share. The scrip was trading at Rs80 at the time of the issue and it moved up to Rs130. In 1994-95, it had posted sales of Rs125.31 crore against the projected Rs117.02 crore. Its net profit was Rs6.77 crore against the projected Rs5.86 crore for 1994-95. In 1995-96, its turnover was Rs128.41 crore and the net profit Rs12.30 against a projected turnover and net profit of Rs145.73 crore and Rs13.95 crore respectively. Its input costs and high interest charges had hit its net profit. It registered sales of Rs176.55 crore (against a projection of Rs174.15 crore) and a net profit of Rs1.65 crore (Rs 15.86 crore) in the 18 months of 1997- 98. APRIL, the Indonesian partner of Finland's UPM-Kymmene, is about to begin starting up its new paper mill in Riau, Sumatra. The agreement signed by the companies in March made it possible to start the mill. The paper mill will have an annual production capacity of 350,000 tns of uncoated fine paper. According to the plan, the capacity is to double in 1999. As raw material the mill will use the pulp made from rainforest wood in a nearby pulp mill. However, the mill is to start using planted acacia pulp in 2004.

Arjo finally gets Muhlebach

Arjo Wiggins Appleton, an Anglo/French paper group, has acquired Muhlebach, a paper distribution company, forming half of Holvis of Switzerland. It acquired the company from BBA of the UK. Arjo also acquired Sottrici Distribuzione of Italy, a paper merchant and a 71% share in Szolamil of Hungary, a paper merchant during 1995.
