Time bomb: disease could ravage India unless government acts
Article Abstract:
India's govt programs to stem the spread of AIDS are succumbing to a variety of obstacles, including prudishness, poor coordination with state govts, and a low priority. The problem still has a low profile because AIDS is not yet rampant, as it is in Thailand and Africa, but some estimates claim 2 million Indians are infected with HIV, and 5 million could be by 2000, with 1/5 of those developed into AIDS. The central govt budgeted $70 million for 1992-97 for AIDS prevention, but states are focused on other diseases instead.

She is especially involved in efforts to study and save the elephant population in Vietnam.

Watchdog vs. top dog: regulators flex muscles against India's biggest firm
Article Abstract:
Criminal charges and a Securities and Exchange Board if India investigation have battered share prices of Reliance Industries and demonstrated the board's willingness to enforce the law against all. The company's muted response has satisfied few shareholders, though some take solace in knowing the overall market will benefit by learning to avoid the same mistakes. The charges mostly involve issuing duplicate shares to some shareholders, and switching shares during a transfer in a possible tax-avoidance scheme.
