Article Abstract:
Joan Hinton, a former nuclear scientist who worked on the Manhattan Project that developed the US atomic bomb, now works at the Agriculture Machinery Experiment Station in Shahe, China. She and her husband Engst work on a dairy farming mechanisation project. She wholly regrets her participation in the manufacture of nuclear bombs and was horrified when the US military bombed Japan. Hinbton, who defected to China in 1948, denies that she was involved in the Chinese nuclear program, yet she defends it by denouincing the US as a nuclear aggressor. A committed Maoist, Hinton is critical of economic reforms implemented since 1979, which she clams have turned over the country to capitalists.
