Second wind for Centauro fire-support vehicles
Article Abstract:
Consortium Iveco Fiat-Oto Melara (CIO) is expected to complete in 2001 its deliveries of the 22 Centauro 8x8 fire-support vehicles ordered by the Spanish Army in Sep 1999. The first three of the vehicles were delivered in Oct 2000 by CIO, which reopened the production line to meet the order. The 22 Centauros are intended for the Luisitania Cavalry Regiment, which is the core of the Spanish Rapid Deployment Force. Centauro incorporates independently stabilized gunner's and commander's sights, and can be employed in the hunter-killer mode and for firing on the move.

The LAV-600 6x6 armored car/reconnaissance vehicle from Textron Marine and Land Systems features a power-operated turret at the rear of the hull and armed with a stabilized BAE Systems RO Defence 105mm low-recoil gun that uses standard NATO ammunition. Standard features of the LAV-600 include a computerized fire-control system; day/night sights for the commander and gunner. Options include NBC protection system; run-flat tires and a centralized tire-pressure regulation system.

The Centauro 8x8 tank destroyer from Iveco Fiat was originally developed for the Italian Army as a vehicle with the firepower of the Leopard main battle tank but with greater mobility. It is armed with a 105mm rifled tank gun that fires standard NATO ammunition using a computerized fire- control system with day/night sights. Standard features include fire detection and suppresion system; NBC protection system; air-conditioning; and centralized tire-pressure regulation system.
