The Deutsche Mark is revered as a national symbol, but its economic preeminence is threatened by successive monetary unions with Eastern Germany and with a unified Europe. The Bundesbank must be restructured to effect changes brought on by reunification, and may be eliminated altogether in a united Europe.

Stock prices on the Frankfurt exchange continue to rise, despite a crippling public employee strike, high interest rates, and high unemployment caused by German reunification. Investors appear to be convinced that the cost of reforming Eastern Germany's economy will not precipitate a recession.
